Welding technologies of bulk metallic glasses

We have succeeded in joining bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) to the same ones, different ones or commercial crystalline metallic materials by friction and electron-beam welding methods. No crystallization and no visible defects were observed in the interface. Metallurgical bonding of BMGs to BMGs and crystalline metals were obtained. The tensile strength of the welded BMGs was the same as that of the parent BMGs or crystalline metallic materials. The successful results of the friction and electron-beam welding are expected to push forward the application of BMGs.
