Abstract :
This study characterizes the dissolution of quaternary P40Na20Ca16Mg24 phosphate glass fibers. Mass loss rate, the evolution of the surface morphology and the pH of solution were monitored. The effects of sizing and annealing on these processes were also studied. Silane coating did not slow down the fiber dissolution rate whereas annealing did. Scanning electron microscopy showed that pitting and hydration led to the peeling of surface layers from the fibers.
