Abstract
This paper presents a new approach for analysing plane strain rolling, which is based on the utilisation of the element free Galerkin (EFG) method for slightly compressible rigid–plastic material models. Special emphasis is placed on the construction of shape functions and their derivatives and the treatment of frictional effects along the contact interface between the workpiece and the roll. Two alternative numerical techniques are put forwards to treat the velocity discontinuity near the corner of the roll entry. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is discussed by comparing theoretical predictions with experimental data found in the literature.
