Abstract
In this paper, Hamiltonʹs principle and finite element method are employed to formulate the new dynamic equation of a tall building subjected to earthquake excitations. A tuned-mass-damper (TMD) system is installed at the top to absorb the earthquake-induced vibrations. First, the non-linear governing equations in the axial and transverse directions are obtained by the Euler-beam theory. Secondly, the simple-flexure beam model is employed to reduce the system as a linear one. The energetic analyses of these two beam theories are provided. It is found that the rigid-body motion of the TMD and the transversal vibrations of the tall building are coupled and energy is transfered between them. Finally, the effects of several parameters on the rigid-body motion and transversal vibrations are presented and discussed.
