Abstract :
This paper contains a discussion of the importance of allowing for the variation of the absorption length of water with wavelength in premixing calculations. A summary of the available data is presented, together with calculations of the effect of melt temperature on the fraction of radiation absorbed. For core melts and high temperature simulants, the need to account for the fact that only a fraction of the radiation is absorbed is demonstrated. A comparison of the absorption calculations used by various workers in the field is presented and it is concluded that there are no significant discrepancies between them. © 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
