Finite element solutions for optimal square plates

Using intuitive arguments analytical calculations of the moments in subdomains of uniformly loaded plates are carried out. Summing the moment volumes for these ‘analytic elements’ the results are identical to those obtained by optimization arguments. A general finite element procedure is then used to obtain useful approximations of these optimal solutions.
