Abstract :
The heterogeneity of surface asperities in yezomatsu and sassafras wood sanding profiles was examined and compared with those of aluminum samples. The results showed that the surface asperities on the smoother yezomatsu sanding profiles were almost as homogeneous as aluminum. In contrast, the smoother sassafras sanding profiles had a high degree of heterogeneity, although the rougher sanding profiles of both the yezomatsu and sassafras wood approximately agreed with that of aluminum. By comparing the sanded surfaces of the aluminum and the two woods, the effect of the wood microstructure on the primary profiles was quantitatively extracted from the statistical data. From these results, it was evident that the heterogeneity of the smoother yezomatsu sanding profiles was only slightly due to the wood microstructure, but the wood microstructure had a significant effect on the smoother sassafras wood sanding profiles.
