Abstract :
A field experiment was conducted at the Central Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2008 to February 2009 to find out the effect of phosphorus and plant spacing on the growth and yield of lettuce. The experiment consisted of two factors. Factor A: Phosphorus (4 levels) P0: 0 kg P2O5 ha-1 (Control); P1: 24 kg P2O5 ha-1, P2: 48 kg P2O5 ha-1 and P3: 72 kg P2O5 ha-1; Factor B: Plant spacing (3 levels); S1: 40 cm x 20 cm, S2: 40 cm x 25 cm; S3: 40 cm x 30 cm. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different yield contributing characters and yield were recorded at 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after transplanting. Results showed that phosphorus and spacing individually and combindly has significant effect on plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf breadth, fresh weight, dry matter content and yield of lettuce. Among the fertilizers and spacing the highest yield obtained from P3 (7.06 t ha-1) and S2 (6.51 t ha-1) respectively. Fertilizer 72 kg P2O5 (P3) and spacing 40 cm x 25 cm (S2) gave the maximum yield (7.68 t ha-1).
