Abstract :
The hydrodynamic pressure on a vertical rectangular gate attached to a rigid dam and subjected to a ground acceleration is investigated using finite element technique to investigate the fluid–structure interaction effect on the dynamic pressure. In the governing equations, pressure for the fluid domain and displacement for the gate are considered as independent nodal variables. Interaction is maintained by transferring the acceleration of the gate to the fluid and pressure of the fluid to the gate in sequence. The unbounded reservoir interacting with the gate is truncated at a closer proximity to the gate simulating a condition for the far boundary. The roles of the frequency of excitation, compressibility of the fluid and flexibility of the gate on dynamic pressure are investigated.
