Abstract :
Effect of temperature on the oxidation behaviour of Fe3Al–Fe3AlC0.69 and FeAl–Fe3AlC0.69 alloys were studied. Physical metallurgy of these alloys with change in temperature was discussed along with the inversion of oxidation based on the Fe–Al–C phase diagram. Two kinds of inversion in oxidation were observed; in Fe3Al–Fe3AlC0.69 alloys inversion was attributed to the reduction in Fe3AlC phase, whereas in FeAl–Fe3AlC0.69 alloys it was due to the preferential oxidation of Al from the FeAl phase. A schematic model was drawn to explain these inversions of oxidation behaviour.
