Abstract :
This article aims to analyse the textual components which are presented in the text of Umdat al-Muhtajin ila Suluk Maslak al- Mufridin (UMSMM), by Abdul Rauf Singkil. The text being studied is the original Malay version which has been transliterated from Jawi script into Romanized script. The analysis focused particularly on the structural components and cohesion. The structural components concentrated on thematic structure (theme and rheme) and structural information (given–new). Concerning cohesion components, the focus was on the presence of conjunctions (eg. dan) and discourse markers (eg. maka, bahawa, bermula) and their functions in the text. This study found that the author tends to use complex sentences with the influenced by Arabic grammar, which is marked by the repeated use of the conjunction “dan” in a sentence. Analysis from the aspect of cohesion revealed that “maka”, for example, has several meanings, depending on the context of the sentences. Furthermore, in terms of information structure, it is found that the style of given–new information is preferred. This study shows the significant difference in the presentation style of classical texts in the 17th century compared to the modern style of presentation in 21st century texts. This study contributes to displaying the uniqueness of UMSMM and the influence of this work in the Muslim community, especially the Malay Archipelago.
