Abstract
It is suggested that the physiological response caused by an excited membrane-bound receptor can be either local, i.e. localized close to the receptor site, or nonlocal, spreading over a large volume in the cell. A simple model is presented which shows how locality and non-locality are related to the intrinsic "efficacy" of the drug used in classical receptor theory. It is further demonstrated how the shape of the physiological response versus receptor occupancy is determined by the number of receptor sites which contribute to the physiological response at a given location in the cell.
