Abstract
The basis of the model presented here is provided by synergetics, an interdisciplinary field of research that deals with the spontaneous formation of spatial, temporal, or functional structures by self-organization. By means of the idea that pattern recognition is pattern formation, the methods of synergetics become applicable for the formulation of a model of pattern recognition. In this top-down approach the model can be realized by a parallel network with one or three layers. By the inclusion of "attention parameters" and their saturation, it becomes possible to model psycho-physical experiments involving the recognition of ambiguous patterns and figures. The recognition of deformed patterns and various invariance properties are briefly discussed.
