Abstract :
The major result of this paper answers a question raised by Waldhausen in 1970 by showing that if M and N are orientable three-dimensional handlebodies with genus(M) ⪢ genus(N) ⪢ 1, then there exist an infinite number of inequivalent proper degree-one maps from M to N.
