Representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface in Sp(4,R)

We compute the number of connected components of the space of representations of the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface in Sp(4,R). We also prove that the moduli space of representation (i.e., the affine quotient of the representation space by the adjoint action of Sp(4,R)) has the same number of connected components as the representation space.
