Abstract :
Coastal Areas Management Programme (CAMP) of the Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was initiated in 1988 in order to implement in selected locations the concept of integrated coastal and marine areas management (ICAM). Currently, seven CAMP projects are in different stages of implementation. The main objectives of CAMPs are to introduce or develop the process of integrated planning and management of Mediterranean coastal areas, and to contribute to a sustainable development and environmental protection. Based on the three completed CAMPs (Kastela Bay, Izmir Bay, and Syrian coast) and the fourth CAMP which is near completion (Rhodes Island), it can be concluded that the development and implementation of CAMPs in the framework of MAP is very successful and appreciated very much by the national and local institutions involved in their implementation.
