Abstract
This paper examines the marine conservation efforts in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of Canadaʹs northwestern Arctic. Lessons learned through the establishment process are discussed, as well as their relevance to future conservation in the context of the Canada Oceans Act (1997). Principles of the Oceans Act parallel the direction of northern efforts. The Act contains provisions that can enhance and strengthen the current land use plans. The act is in accordance with the Inuvialuit Final Agreement and is consistent with past conservation efforts in the region.
