Developing a cadre of professionals with a global environmental perspective

This paper is constructed as an essay placing special emphasis on the attributes of knowledge, the way they are transmitted and the existing relations among institutions and the (environmental and socioeconomic) problems they try to solve. It reviews some of the educational proposals in general and topics of the environmental agenda in particular. Furthermore, this essay considers various elements and attributes that have been proposed regarding education in the future, in the light of different institutional efforts. ain approaches are developed in the form of a kaleidoscope to delimit the problem fields in the training and education of professionals endowed with a global perspective: (a) education in a socioeconomic and cultural asymmetric world, (b) individual values vs. collectivity: competition inhibits cooperation, (c) scarcity and deterioration of resources: re-thinking and re-stating the idea of “resource management”, (d) meaning and significance of the coast: cultural barriers, importing and exporting management ideas?
