Abstract :
Over the last decade, the use of co-management arrangements in fisheries and coastal resource management in the Caribbean region has increased as new approaches to management have been sought. This paper adds to the growing knowledge base about co-management in the Caribbean region through six new case studies from Barbados, Belize and Grenada. It presents a comparative analysis of lessons learned and conditions for success from both the secondary literature on co-management in the Caribbean region and from the six new case studies such as clearly defined membership, shared problem recognition, clear management objectives, effective communication, support from external agents, and enforceable rules.
