Abstract
This article summarizes the findings of a research project to measure the progress made in managing coastal resources in Canadaʹs Maritime Provinces using an integrated management (IM) approach. From a Canadian perspective, this region has a considerable breadth of experience in various forms of community-based and integrated processes of resource management. Data were obtained by conducting quantitative and qualitative surveys with existing IM groups and government agencies. Results indicate that actors are communicating, building new networks and trust, as a result of being involved in IM projects. A solid constituency is being built with individual commitment and motivation. There are however few indications that actors have moved beyond this threshold to solidify sustainable practices. The research identified several obstacles to the continuing progress of IM in the region.
