Abstract
Recently we proposed a preemptive protocol handling multiple classes of traffic on a slotted ring LAN. In this paper we analyze the protocol for voice-data integration and present a comparative study of its performance with other well-known ring LAN protocols. We derive approximate closed form expressions for response time distribution of both voice and data traffic in their transform forms. The analysis is validated through simulation. Computation of important performance metrics is discussed. Through extensive simulation we compare the performance of our protocol with token ring based FDDI, slotted ring bassed Cambridge Fast Ring (CFR), and register-insertion ring based TORNET2 for a wide range of workloads.
