Generic fibre product of one-dimensional manifolds

The generic fibre product M×RN of smooth manifolds M and N over R is itself a smooth manifold. It can therefore be characterized by the number of its connected components. We give such a characterization in the case of compact one-dimensional manifolds in terms of relations among the critical values of maps f:M→R and g:N→R. A simple efficient algorithm is provided.
