Non-stratifiability of for a class of separable metrizable X

If X is a separable 0-dimensional metrizable space in which every compact subset is countable, then C ( X ) with the compact-open topology is stratifiable iff X is scattered. This answers a question of Gruenhage and lends credence to a conjecture of Gartside and Reznichenko.
