Hereditarily indecomposable subcontinua of the product of two Souslin arcs are metric

We prove that if each of X and Y is a Souslin arc (a Hausdorff arc that is the compactification of a connected Souslin line), then every hereditarily indecomposable subcontinuum of X × Y is metric.
