Validity of Malaysiaʹs baselines and territorial sea claim in the northern Malacca Strait

A suit brought in the High Court of Singapore raised the question of the validity of Malaysiaʹs baseline and territorial sea claims in the northern Malacca Strait. Malaysiaʹs claims are invalid because it has breached both the 1958 Geneva Convention and the Vienna Law of Treaties Convention; exempted the area in question from the Geneva Conventionʹs applicability; used base points and baselines that do not conform to 1982 UNCLOS Article 7; restricted the rights of third-party states; and published public documents and undertaken actions inconsistent with its claims.
