Abstract :
The use of reading strategies is recognized as an important factor for success in academic reading for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. However, almost no research exists on how frequently Persian-speaking EFL learners make use of reading strategies. This study endeavors to fill this void by exploring the level of metacognitive awareness of reading strategies among university students (n=115). The results of the quantitative survey revealed that while all participants reported medium use of strategies overall, some differences were found in reported use of each subscale of the inventory. The use of reading strategies for problem solving was found to be higher than that used for global understanding and support. The most frequent strategy in each subscale of the survey was also found. Identifying reading strategies of EFL learners can help teachers in promoting an enhanced active engagement with the text among language learners.
