Abstract
The methods used to estimate surface particulate matter emissions from the inner urban area of Newcastle NSW are described, as examples of procedures to establish an overall emissions inventory. The major sources of concern are bare surface soil, industrial stockpiles, and unpaved roads within industrial boundaries. Of these, emissions from bare soil areas and unpaved roads are the highest, with total surface particulate emissions (uncontrolled) estimated to be 45,000 kg/day, twice that from industrial stacks.
