Abstract
Commutativity of differentiation and discretization is considered in the context of finding the optimal shape of an electromagnet. An expression for the gradient in the finite-dimensional setting is derived and compared with the corresponding infinite-dimensional gradient. An asymptotic convergence result for the finite-dimensional gradients is proved under suitable smoothness assumptions on the finite element basis.
