Abstract :
Kriging, a geospatial interpolation technique, has been used in the present work to drive a search-and-optimization algorithm which produces the optimum geometric parameters for a 5 MW research reactor design. The technique has been demonstrated to produce an optimal neutronic solution after a relatively small number of core calculations. It has additionally been successful in producing a design which significantly improves thermal neutron fluxes by 30% over existing reactors of the same power rating. Best practices for use of this algorithm in reactor design were identified and indicated the importance of selecting proper correlation functions.
