Abstract
In this paper, we consider distributed parameter system (DPS) models for the vibration of a vertical slender structure. These models are designed to be equivalent to Newlandʹs lumped parameter system (LPS) models [1,2]. We compare results for the natural frequencies and the effect of damping with those obtained by Newland. The finite-element method proved to be well suited for this kind of investigation.
