Abstract
Use of an α-chloroacetyl group allows for the conditional N-terminal capping of peptides. This capping group is easily introduced and stable over a broad pH range, but can be converted to glycine by aqueous ammonia treatment in order to perform N-terminal Edman peptide sequencing.
