Development of an approach to the synthesis of the plakortones

A general synthesis of the plakortones has been developed by the synthesis of two key sections, with a focus on Pd(II)-promoted preparation of a cis-fused tetrahydrofuranolactone. The key intermediates were obtained in homochiral form starting from asymmetric epoxidation of an allylic alcohol.
