Buckling of an internally hinged column with an elastic support

The buckling behavior of a column with a weakening hinge but strengthened with a spring support is analyzed. The characteristic equations are found exactly for six different combinations of end conditions. Optimum locations of the hinge for maximum strength are determined. In some cases there exists a minimum spring stiffness which is adequate for maximum buckling load.
