Abstract :
A systematic approach to assess the structural integrity and functional viability of the basement of a 40,000 m2 building complex, which was affected by a 3 m rise in groundwater level (GWL) after occupancy, is presented. Visual observations, in situ testing of structural components and analytical studies using commercially available finite element analysis programs were employed to implement the structural condition assessment and appraisal program. Functional viability of the basement, after being affected by groundwater, was carried out based on BS 8102 guidelines. It was concluded that the basement structure was to be strengthened for 25% of the plan area to withstand the applied hydrostatic pressure. In the meanwhile, functionality of the basement, after required strengthening, was also determined to be slightly impaired due to the revised loading conditions. Increased maintenance and periodic inspection were recommended for satisfactory operation of the basement.
