Abstract :
At the surface of the bulk Al70Pd20Mn10 quasicrystal, different surface phases can be induced upon changing the chemical composition. Using combined Auger electron and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, information was obtained on the local density of states of the alloy components. In the quasicrystalline state the Mn 3d band moves away from the Fermi level thus lowering the density of states and opening the pseudogap.
