The surface chemistry of catalysis: new challenges ahead

Surface scientists have over the last few decades greatly advanced the atomic level understanding of the surface chemical reactions associated with heterogeneous catalysis. Nonetheless, many fundamental questions still remain unanswered. In this review, a critical analysis of the state of the art of this field is provided, and a number of future research directions are suggested.
