Abstract :
This paper presents a simple mechanics model for analyzing the stresses, strains and displacements of the human cornea under the action of the intraocular pressure. The analysis is performed under the assumptions that when the cornea undergoes small displacements the stress–strain constitutive relation includes an isotropic, linear material of ground substance and an orthotropic, nonlinear material of collagen fibrils. The present results highlight the influence of corneal geometry and its local microstructural organisation on the corneal overall mechanical properties.
