Abstract
This paper describes an explicit numerical model of the process for shaping thin metal tubes using a high speed water jet in both methods of a slug of water and a continuous water jet. The pressure distribution on the interface and bulging of the tube following impact by the water jet was numerically analysed. The result of modelling was validated using the experimental data obtained previously by one of the authors and others [S.A.L. Salem, Some aspects of liquid/solid interaction at high speeds. Ph.D. Thesis, UMIST, 1980, A. Turgutlu, Impact Spot Welding, Ph.D. Thesis, UMIST, 1984, S.A.L. Salem, S.T.S. Al-Hassani, Spot welding by high speed water slug, Conference paper, Publisher: Marcel Dekker Inc (Mechanical Engineering 52), New York, NY, USA, 1986, M. Chizari, S.T.S. Al-Hassani, L.M. Barrett, Experimental and numerical study of water jet spot welding, J. Mater. Process. Tech. 198 (2008) 213–219]. The predictions of the pressure distribution on the solid surface and the bulging of the tube agreed well with the experimental results.
