Abstract
In this study, 0.5 ML of antimony has been adsorbed on Cu{1 1 0} at room temperature (300 K). This leads to formation of a c(2 × 2) phase, which has been studied by quantitative LEED. The favoured structure is a substitutional surface alloy where every other top layer copper atom has been replaced by an antimony atom. The antimony atoms are buckled toward the solid vacuum interface by 0.25 ± 0.05 إ with respect to the first layer copper atoms. Buckling of the deeper atomic layers is negligible. The Pendry R-factor for the favoured structure is 0.20.
