Abstract
A collision-induced desorption (CID) phenomenon was investigated using a new combined system of a molecular beam and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). We have observed the desorption of N2 from an Ni(100) surface induced by collision with hyperthermal xenon atoms. FTIR spectra showed that N2 molecules were removed randomly by the collision. The cross-section of the CID depended on the incident energy of the xenon. For 1.23 eV this was 1.2 إ2. In addition, a difference between the mechanisms of CID and thermal desorption was found.
