Adsorbate–adsorbate interaction mediated by substrate lattice

We calculate the adsorbate-induced surface stress and the adsorbate–adsorbate interaction assuming that the adsorbate exerts a force on surrounding substrate atoms. The most prominent result is a non-monotonic distance dependence of the interaction energies, in agreement with available data for CO chemisorption on several noble-metal surfaces.
