Al2O3-coated LiCoO2 as cathode material for lithium ion batteries

LiCoO2 was surface modified with amorphous Al2O3. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical studies indicate that surface modification improves the cycle stability of the material significantly. This improvement is attributed to the amorphous Al2O3 film that hinders cobalt dissolution and stabilizes the structure of LiCoO2.
