Dementia and restraint

Summary is a mutual relationship between dementia and physical restraint: the demented patients represent a high risk group for restraint because their cognitive incompetence, frequent and unexpected emergence of disruptive behaviors. On the other hand, the restraint use may contribute to further decline in cognition. Alternatives to physical restraints should be tested, evaluated and implemented. This issue constitutes an important challenge for the nursing homes and dementia care units.
