Abstract :
A recent study of Cu 55 Hf 45 − x Ti x metallic glasses with 0 ≤ x ≤ 45 has revealed the formation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) for 15 ≤ x ≤ 30 . In the same composition range, the ratio of the glass transition temperature T g , and the liquidus temperature T l , showed a shallow maximum, consistent with the highest glass forming ability (GFA). Here, we present the results for some mechanical properties (Young’s modulus and microhardness) and magnetic properties (magnetic susceptibility) of these alloys and compare their variation with x with those for T g and the crystallization temperature T x . All measured properties show monotonic variations with x with no particular features in the composition range for BMG formation, hence do not indicate BMG compositions. The applicability of different criteria for assessing GFA to studied alloy system is briefly discussed.
