Abstract :
Laser excitation of the ν3 (v=1) level of 13CO2 in solid argon is found to induce strong (ν1+ν2, 3ν2)→(ν1, 2ν2) and (ν1, 2ν2→ν2) emissions in the 16 μm spectral region. Their sharp threshold in function of the laser excitation density is interpreted as the signature of vibrational stimulated emission (VSE). Upon site-selective excitation, the VSE exhibits marked differences in threshold, temporal behaviour and relative intensities. Its time dependence gives some insight into the vibrational dynamics of matrix-isolated CO2. In particular, it suggests for the upper levels of VSE transitions a rather long vibrational lifetime in the μs range.
