Are atoms stabilized by ultraintense lasers?

We critically examine theoretical arguments that predict that atoms become resistant toward photoionization as the laser intensity is arbitrarily increased. We conclude that atoms become fully ionized in the ultraintense field limit, and that they do not stabilize as bound states.
