Abstract :
The formation of bimetallic Pt/Ag alloy in an amorphous Ag film supported on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite has been investigated with scanning photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy. This spatially resolved study reveals that alloying strongly depends on the morphology of the deposited metal. Whereas little metal intermixing is found in small Ag clusters (50 إ), efficient alloying is observed in much larger heterogeneous structures. Subsequent annealing results in a decrease of the exposed alloy component, due to segregation of the two metal species.
