Abstract
The absorption maximum of bacteriorhodopsin is calculated using the results of the full-atomic molecular orbital calculation for this protein. In addition, the absorption maximum of protonated retinal Schiff base in methanol is calculated using a self-consistent reaction field theory. Comparing these results, it is concluded that the protein electrostatic environment does not cause a red-shift to the absorption band of the chromophore.
