By characterizing a universal property and several nonuniversal properties that accompany the presence or onset of instabilities, the dominate reactions of a complex process, the voltammetric oxidation of ethylene glycol, are identified with those of a more fundamental reaction process, the voltammetric oxidation of methanol.
