Gas phase reaction of nitrous acid and methyl nitrite with arenium ions. A new route to electrophilic aromatic nitrosation

The occurrence of an alternative route to aromatic nitrosation, based on the reaction of gaseous RC6H6+ arenium ions (R  H, CH3) with XONO neutrals (X  H, CH3), has been demonstrated by FT-ICR mass spectrometry.
